Tekken 4 is the first Tekken game in the core series released for the PlayStation 2 and the fifth release overall in the legendary fighting franchise. The game was developed and published in-house by Namco. In this installment of Tekken, Heihachi Mishima is attempting to use the devil gene for his dark experiments. This gene resides in his father and grandson, Kazuya and Jin, respectively. He launches a new King of the Iron Fist Tournament to draw his foes out of hiding with his dark games. Tekken 4 is a one-on-one fighting game for 1 to 2 players. Like most fighting games, each character in Tekken 4 has unique moves. Characters can string these moves into intense combos that can reduce an opponent's life meter quickly, and the vibration function gives each hit extra impact. Players perform these attacks by pressing combinations of buttons.
Tekken 4 features 23 playable fighters. Fighters like Eddy Gordo, Nina Williams, Kazuya Mishima, Lee Chaolan, Heihachi, and Ling Xiaoyu return from the previous Tekken game. New fighters like Steve Fox, Craig Marduk, and Christie Monteiro make their debut in Tekken 4. Some of these fighters are locked, requiring players flex their skills to fulfill certain requirements in order to play them. Like past Tekken games, each character has an array of costumes to select from. These costumes range from serious fighting garb to outlandish fantasy costumes. Tekken 4 features nine different gameplay modes.
The story mode in this title lets players fight through the story of their chosen fighter. The story of each fighter is told via cut scenes interspersed between each match. These cut-scenes are unique for each character. For example, choosing Jin Kazama will feature cut scenes with him facing off against Heihachi. Paul Phoenix will interact with a different rival. The arcade mode allows players to battle opponents without any cut scenes. The versus game mode lets you fight against your friends in local multiplayer. Lastly, there is Tekken Force, a technique that was made specifically for the PS2 version of this game. In Tekken Force, players control their fighter in a third-person view. You'll battle against numerous enemies across four different stages. As you fight, you'll pick up power-ups that will give you an edge against your opponents.
Tekken 4 uses a brand new graphics engine that is different from the ones found in previous games. This engine takes full advantage of the processing power of the PS2. The major improvement this graphics engine offers is that its levels feature environmental hazards. For example, you can knock your opponent into a wall to deal extra damage to him. The graphics engine also lets Namco add more animation frames to each fighter, causing them to move more fluidly. The lighting, water, and physics are also significantly increased as well.Tekken 4 features a rating of T for Teen due to its use of violence and blood. This title is an excellent fighting game whether alone or with friends. With its array of modes, it provides an almost unlimited amount of replay.
